Is it usually windy in Cabarete Kite Beach DR?

When’s the best time of the year to kitesurf in Dominican Republic Cabarete KiteBeach?
Where can I find reliable Cabarete wind & wave weather forecasts?

Now, when you search online you find all kinds of information, some of it is disinformation or old stuff that was written with windsurfing in mind.
So, Stefan, from his experience will tell you what's the truth. He's lived in Cabarete Kitebeach since 16 years and was for 20 years a keen windsurfer, prior to being the first one to kiteboard in Cabarete… and he now also Paraglides, so he really MUST know the winds… Or he'll drop like a hot watermelon from the skies…

Well, how's the wind in Cabarete and Kitebeach?

When Stefan started his 1st kiteboarding school in 1999, (it was the very first kiteboarding school in entire Caribbean), we had 280 windy days suitable for small kites.
For Cabarete a 12m and smaller is used. 12m is an average sized kite.
Together with stonger wind days we had around 300 days of wind.
In following 2 years we had less than 20 days without wind…

However, in 2005-6 it was bad for wind, I guess we had 120-150 days of wind. The el Ninio period.
So by the way, that's the time we added paragliding to our school (to Kitexcite), so that you, as our student, can have an exciting alternaive in case of unlucky no-wind days, during your kiteboarding holiday.

Stefan fell in love with paragliding during this time, and find it a super nice place for paragliding all year round, and Kite beach Cabarete is one of the best Caribbean beaches for learning paragliding on, learning the first steps of paragliding- fast, safely and cost efficiently!

Kitexcite also offers tandem flights and paragliding tours in the dominican republic. We're the only school offering paragliding in the Dominican Republic.

Best time of year to go kiteboarding in Cabarete Kite Beach is basically all year round. The last 3 years we had wind 30 days in december, which is normally considered low or no wind month. The last 3 years it is blowing here again all year round, no breaks, apart for a few rainy days.

Wind direction in Cabarete and in Kite beach (the next door beach) on most days it is a perfect direction of side-onshore wind. 10-28 knots all year round, where in June-July it's between 15-25knots. Maximum trade winds are 218 knots.

If you're looking for wind and wave forecasts check out our free Cabarete wind forecast or go to predictwind.com (but they charge). The other forecast sites do not calculate the local thermal influencing their forecasts, nor the wind at the reef itself. So they always under-forecasting 4-8 knots.

The environmental conditions that indicate that the wind will soon increase are:
1. The temperature gets hotter,
2. The humidity increases, and
3. Wind slows down.

Also – depending where you're kitesurfing, watch out for the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, as it produces unstable and strong winds. A cumulonimbus cloud is a dark cloud of great vertical extent (in everyday words: it looks like a huge pile of cottonwool towering upwards like after the A-bomb sort of thing) charged with
electricity; It's associated with thunderstorms. These clouds are often accompanied by
rain and possibly even hail, in some locations.

Cumulonimbus clouds indicate that a low-pressure system is approaching and that the wind will soon suddenly increase in strength.
A low-pressure system brings rain and storms and this can be seen by watching the sky.

Additionally, you might observe the sky in the morning. A red sky in the morning
in the East usually indicates an approaching low-pressure system. again, depending where you go kitesurfing.

Here in Cabarete Kitebeach we get the trade winds and they are pretty stable – no nasty surprises in mid water…
