What Must a Kiteboarding Student Learn?
How to Make Sure You'll Be safe When Practicing Kite Boarding on Your Own
There are 20 imortant things a kite boarding student must know:
- If you are going kiting alone let someone know where you are going and what time you are planning to come back.
- Whenever possible kiteboard with a friend, or with someone you meet on the beach who can help you if you need.
- Know the weather forecast before you go out kiteboarding.
- Do not kite board in conditions which exceed your abilities.
- Know how to choose a kiteboarding location which is safe.
- Know the International signals (especially the one for "help")
- Knows how to make a kiteboarding self rescue.
- Uses a helmet and life jacket and whistle when you kiteboard.
- Recognize wind shifts and changes in weather which might lead to worsening kitesurfing conditions
- Always check the kite material and seams for any tears or weaknesses before launching your kite.
- Uses appropriate bladder pressure for your kiteboarding kite.
- Check to make sure the kite bridles are free of tangles and that all kite connection knots are in good condition.
- Make sure there are no "unwanted" knots in the kite lines and that the power lines are in good shape.
- Connections should be free of sand.
- Make sure the front lines are connected to the leading edge and that the front and back lines are not twisted.
- Make sure the kite safety system is functioning and the velcro band in the leash is clear of sand and grass, and that the leash is not tangled.
- Check the kiteboarding board for cracks
- Make sure the kiteboard foot straps are adjusted to fit your feet and the screws are nice and tight
- Have a hand ready on the release pin during kite launches or landings.
- Know the right of way rules, and of-course use general common sense rules on the water such as- how to avoid kiteboard collisions at all cost, even when you have the right of way.
