Dominican Republic, Silver Bank & Humpback Whales
Watch the Humpback Whales Sing
The humpback whales are ariving in Samana Bay, Dominican Republic. They will be passing by Kitebeach Cabarete, but whale whatching in Kite Beach cabarete is not very easy. Best whale watching location is Samana Bay.
Humpbacks are great singers and have the most complex songs we know any animal to sing- in or out of the water.
With a brain +6 times larger than ours you'd expect the humpback whales to be genius at something…
Here's an interesting video where they recorded some short part of a humpback whale's song:
What is The Silver Bank?
Can you rob it? Is it good for stashing your non-taxed dough? Do the 5,000 humpbacks plan to invade it?

The Silver Bank is located 60 Miles (100 km) north of the Dominican Republic. The Silver Bank is actually a 3000 square kilometer reef system between Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos, and one of the many breeding locations for humpback whales. Some consider this area as home to the largest winter population of humpback whales in the world.
Research shows that this “Silver Bank” area contains the largest population of humpbacks in the North Atlantic Ocean, if not the world.
From December to mid of April the waters of the Dominican Republic are teaming with North Atlantic Humpback Whales, migrating to their mating, breeding and calving locations throughout the area. These breeding and calving grounds include the waters of the Dominican Republic (primarily Silver Bank, Navidad bank and Samana Bay), Mona Passage (Puerto Rico), Virgin Bank and Anguilla Bank.
In 1986 the area was established as a "Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic" by the Dominican republic government and has become the secure winter home to nearly a third of the Atlantic Ocean's humpback whale population.
Whale watch tour boats must obay the strict Dominican Republic government guidelines to ensure that the whales are respected in their natural habitat. These guidelines include imposing an exclusion zone for boats of 165 feet from adult humpback whales and 270 feet from any pod of humpback whales that include a calf.
