A gentle soar is the type of flying in this site. You can fly either with S or E breeze, which blows from 10 AM to 8 PM. A perfect alternative for the flight in Azua when conditions are too strong for thermaling. You can fly along the ridge for 5 km out and back.

The takeoff is about 25 m S from Azua (1 h 45 m from Santo Domingo). A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.

CABARETE, Dominican Republic — I have just tumbled, skipped, and skidded across the ocean, harnessed to a giant kite like a dog leashed to a race car. Somehow, I hear my Italian kiteboarding instructor shouting through the radio attached to my helmet.

"Find the balance, Daveeed. FIND THE BALANCE!"

I checked into Kitexcite for lessons. As dozens of students, instructors, and a few of those world-class Dominicans milled about, one fact became startling: I was twice the average age…………………….

Kiteboarding and Paragliding in Cabarete with Kitexcite

The link between paragliding and kiteboarding?

Basically, paragliding is an exciting outdoor activity that is most enjoyable in light or no wind conditions, while kiteboarding (Also referred to as Kitesurfing or Power Kiting) offers the same excitement levels and an adrenaline rush when the wind gets better & stronger.

The dynamics of how the two sports work is also similar which often means "pilots" can easily cross from one sport to the other. Add to this the fact that the Dominican Republic has so much coast and reliable Trade Winds and you start to get the idea!

Kitexcite Paragliding Tour Azua Dominican Republic 10.19.2009

The Azua Paraglide Flying Site

Azua is a town located about  1h 20min W from Santo Domingo, in the South Coast. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required, otherwise you have a 15 minutes hike up (not that hard).

The takeoff is located in a small range which highest point is less than 350 m AGL. This range runs E, parallel to the first big ranges of the Central Range which is about 2 km N.

The takeoff faces the sea (Bahía de Ocoa), about 5 km S. Azua, as most of the rest of the South West, a semi-desert terrain.

Launch Altitude AGL [m]: 90

Azua Wind Conditions for Paragliding flights:
It's an amazing flying site considering the takeoff altitude.

Pilots often takeoff early in the morning, about 10, to soar with the incoming sea breeze.
A little later you can start feeling thermal activity that gets to a peak about 12:30 PM.

Thermals may be disordered, but if you are patient and get more than 800 m AGL then you can head N for the bigger stuff. If you succeed in reaching the big mountains behind the takeoff area, then the normal route would be NW along the Central Range, exploiting the altitude wind blowing E.
XC potential is remarkable as the Central Range goes deep into Haiti, for more than 150 km.

Maximum XC distance registered: 60 km

The flying sites…

General location:

The CaribbeanXC competition 2007 was based in San Juan de la Maguana. San Juan is a major city, located in a beautiful valley in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, with Cordillera Central to the north and Sierra de Neyba to the south. The city is over 60 km inland and is about 3 hours west of Santo Domingo, the capital city.

The whole area is protected from the trade winds that blow east, and the local aerology creates the best free flying environment in the country.

Disciplines for Paragliders

Early paragliders had very poor performance and it was generally only possible to fly from the top of the hill to the bottom. As the paraglider technology developed more possibilities opened up: staying up for as long a time as possible (maximum duration), getting as high as possible (maximum altitude gain) and flying as far as possible (maximum distance). The sport has developed further and now has several sub-disciplines each with its own adherents and competition circuit. These are:

Soaring with your Paraglider

Flying for the simple pleasure of flying, anywhere from sand dunes to mountain ridges, usually at well understood flying sites.

Cross country (XC) Paragliding

Taking off and trying to fly as far as possible from the take off site. Good XC pilots are experts at finding and using different types of lift such as thermals and can fly 10-200km in a day depending on the landscape and weather conditions.

Paraglide Racing

Typically flying defined tasks as a race against others. Competition pilots use special high-performance gliders that demand a high level of pilot skill to fly and can complete 30-100km races in one to three hours. The world's best racers compete in the Paragliding World Cup and the Paragliding World Championship.

Paraglider Landing Accuracy

Spot landings. The top pilots can reliably landing within ten centimetres of the target every single time.

Acro (acrobatics) with your Paraglider

Doing paragliding acrobatic tricks such as loops and wingovers. See Acromania for a description of the various tricks. In acro competitions pilots score points for the difficulty of the tricks they do and how well they are performed.

Vol-rando and para-alpinism

Walking or climbing up a hill or mountain with a lightweight paraglider for the pleasure of the ascent and then descending using a paraglider. A complete set of paragliding equipment (wing, harness, helmet, etc.) typically weighs 15-20 kg, the equivalent specialist lightweight kit can weigh as little as 5 kg.

Vol-biv (vol bivouac)

Doing multiday trips combining paragliding, walking and camping. Vol-biv trips last from a couple of days to several weeks.

Record hunting paragliders

Several world records are recognised, typically for flying as far as possible or completing a defined task as quickly as possible. Breaking a world or national record nowadays requires a huge amount of planning and preparation, pilot skill, the very best equipment, as well as a bit of luck on the day.

Adventure Flying Paraglider Pilots

Exploring the corners of the world with a paraglider, demanding a high level of self-reliance and commitment. Adventure pilots fly where no-one else has done before and often where an unintended landing would be extremely serious due to inhospital terrain or remoteness.

Pilots typically start with soaring, whether thermal or ridge soaring. Some move on to cross country, vol-rando, acro or accuracy flying, while many are content to simply get in the air at their local flying site. Experienced cross country pilots might then explore racing or vol-biv, whereas those who enjoy vol-rando might try para-alpinism. Acro paragliding is an emerging sport and very much the realm of extremely skillful pilots. Record hunting and adventure flying is for those at the top of their game.

Do I need my own gear to learn kiteboarding?

First of all, if you haven't yet done any kiteboarding lessons in a good Kiteboarding school then wait until you do.

There's no need to buy equipment beforehand, as kiteboarding schools have all the equipment you need for learning.

Some kiteboarding schools, (like Kitexcite kite center in Kitebeach Cabarete) are authorized dealers and can give you special deals on kite boarding equipment new- or used kites and boards, when you do a kiteboarding course with them.

Secondly, it depends on how much time you'll be spending on kiteboarding every year.

If you just only kiteboard on a few holidays and travel to places like Read more about Should I Buy or Rent Kiteboarding Equipment?
